High Marks — so far - Hartford Insurance Group - Auto
Written on 5 January 2009 by adminI recently switched to Hartford for my autos/motorhome and homeowners insurance. Hartford is the current underwriter for AARP. If you are 50 or older you must check out AARP - they saved me $700 a year (at coverage levels higher than I was carrying with my previous provider). I was previously with PEMCO Mutual Insurance for over 16 years with no chargeable accidents (See my review of PEMCO) and would have stayed with them if their rates were even close to competitive. I have not had any claims experience with AARP (Hartford) but they were very helpful and straightforward while I was setting up my policy. They even recommended not to take certain coverages (I was trying to match the exact coverage I carried with PEMCO) because the were really duplicate. They were trying to save me money as I signed up by tailoring my policy to my real insurance needs.

Written on 4 January 2009 by adminI got MetLife because the premium rate was good and the coverage seemed comprehensive. But, no one told me that there are no adjusters or representatives within 2000 miles of Washington state. Of course, for many years, MetLife TOOK my money just fine; however, when it had to deliver the service I paid for, it failed miserably. I was hit by an uninsured motorist, so all of the claim had to go under my UIM coverage. I stay highly insured, so I wasn’t worried about getting my expenses covered. Unfortunately, I should not have been so confident. It turns out that there are no MetLife adjusters, medical claim reps, or loss specialists in Washington State. The claims are handled through Illinois and New York. So, everything you submit to or receive from the company has a 3-5 day lag on either end, since it has to be mailed. On top of that, the adjuster immediately gave me this “line” about how it would take her 30 days to get the collision report (why so long she never explained), so I had to get the collision report. When it became difficult for me to do, the adjuster took over…at glacial speed. It has been a month, and there is still not any information about my deductible. Additionally, my car ended up being a total loss, but I didn’t know that until almost 3 weeks into the claim. That left me with only 1.5 weeks of rental car coverage to find a new car and no settlement check with which to actually purchase the car. As this car issues is winding up, I decided to follow-up on the medical claim side. When I called the representative to find out what was holding up $300 in prescription reimbursements, she said that she had to get questions answered before she could cut a check. Unfortunately, I had to CALL HER to find out that additional information was necessary. Who knows how much time would have passed before she would have called me of her own accord. And, like the car claim, all of the medical documentation has to be mailed thousands of miles away and, it turns out, takes weeks to process - let alone “settle.” I have the lowest expectations for the medical claim at this point.

Written on 4 January 2009 by adminLast month, I decided to go shopping for auto insurance. I went to the usual companies - Allstate, Progressive, State Farm, Esurance, ect. All of the companies I quoted with were higher than my current insurance cost. But when I used Progressive’s competitive pricing, they suggested that Erie would be cheaper than what I was paying.
I went to Erie’s website (www.erieinsurance.com). They didn’t have an instant quote, but I could enter information about myself, my vehicle and the coverages I wanted and could select which agent I wanted to do the quote. I did that on a Sunday and I got a call on Tuesday from my selected agent who was able to provide me with a quote.

Written on 3 January 2009 by adminLast week I wrote about AAA Auto Insurance’s attempts to put us in a high-risk category because my husband took a half-dose mild glycogenic pill for type II diabetes.
This week I’m writing about my son’s first attempt, at the age of 20, to get his own car insurance, and State Farm’s efforts to put him in a high-risk pool, despite his perfect driving record.
I don’t like to do "complaint" reviews. But when I put these two reviews together, along with the experiences that others have had, I begin to wonder how anyone can meet the insurance industry’s "good driver" standards after being filtered through the various screening devices they use.

Written on 3 January 2009 by adminFirst of all let’s talk about insurance. Everybody I know hates it and doesn’t like to talk about it unless they’re selling it!
What I like about GEICO is 1) they are the most inexpensive insurer
that I have found. 2) They are accessible 24/7. 3) No salesmen ever call.
4) Their customer service is fast, reliable and friendly.
There are people who need to have a personal agent. I would rather have access to the company any time than playing phone tag with my agent.
Since my family are safe drivers, my rates have not been jacked up.

Written on 2 January 2009 by adminOk, here is the deal. I am going to give you the secret to qualifying for Farmers preferred auto rates. Are you ready?
Have good credit and no tickets or accidents…
That might seem a little oversimplified and it is to a certain degree but that really is the heart of the issue. There are some of you that don’t understand the credit part of it and we are going to talk about that. There are some that don’t understand the tickets and accidents part and well there isn’t much I can do to help you. Let’s get that part out of the way now.

Written on 2 January 2009 by adminAs a college student who moves around a lot and has little money, State Farm has been a wonderful surprise.
Though I attend school in New York, living there most of the year, I bought a car in Maryland and registered it there. My parents live in North Carolina. Confusing, I know, but bear with me. An agent from State Farm was extremely helpful in aiding me to figure out how to work out my car’s insurance. It seems that North Carolina had the cheapest rates and since I was still a dependent of my parents and live there part-time, I could take advantage of that.

Written on 1 January 2009 by adminPity the poor soul who has even the most minor blemish on their driving record. Such a soul once was I. In litigious states such as California (which may now be said to be the Lawyer’s State and NOT the Golden State!) auto insurance companies tend to look at any driver with any kind of a blemish, even with no drugs or alcohol involved, as not much better than a terrorist. What a way to start looking for insurance after a small parking lot accident of the most **minor** kind. That accident may as well have marked me with Nathaniel Hawthorne’s infamous scarlet ‘S’ from his famous novel, The Scarlet Letter.

Written on 31 December 2008 by adminI recently purchased what some may consider a sports car. I called my insurance agent to make adjustments to my policy. I was then informed that my insurance would more than double it’s original amount, to $250 a month. This is only because I’m young, I was told. I then called Geico. They gave me a rate of about $200 a month. I accepted. Since then I called and got a quote for insuring two newer cars when I get married in a few months. And you know what? I will be paying less for two cars than I am for one right now. Not to mention the fact that Geico reviews your policy every six months and considers reducing your premium by 5%. I’ve never had any accidents or tickets and now, seven months later I pay $164 a month. I recommend Geico to any young person with a clean driving record who is having to pay an outrageous premium.
