Back in 1990, a friend recommended that I consider Amica for automobile insurance. At first, I was skeptical because I had never heard of the company, but in my search for quality coverage, I knew it would be worthwhile to check it out. I was encouraged to find that Consumer Reports ranked Amica as one of the best insurance companies overall, and I believe this is still the case.
Now, ten years later, my wife and I are still with Amica, and they provide all but our life insurance policies. And we have shopped other insurers in recent years to see if others offered better rates or service, but so far no one has been worthwhile enough for us to switch.
Here’s why:
1. Amica covers only good risk clients. If you are a safe driver, this company is for you. They are selective and are able to keep claim payments to a minimum because they insure safer, low risk drivers. Your good driving habits pay off here.
2. Great service when you have a claim. So far, we have had only one claim in ten years. Our car was broken into in Canada while we were on vacation, and our stereo equipment and some personal items were stolen. Amica was immediately responsive and had a check to us within ten days of filing the claim. They were sympathetic, polite, professional, and prompt.
3. Dividend option. Amica will allow you to handle your premium in two ways. You can pay a flat rate, or you can elect for a dividend option. Here’s how it works. You might pay $500 a year for auto coverage with the non dividend option, or you might pay $600 for the dividend option. If you take the dividend option, Amica will issue a dividend to you close to your renewal period. The dividend is usually approximately 20% to 25% of your premium price and is based on the company’s profits as well its claim expense for the year. The end result is that you are highly likely to end up paying less than what you would have if you would have taken the non-dividend option. And your overall premium will probably be quite competitive with other insurance companies. In my rough example here, you might only pay $420 a year after you get your dividend. I’ve never had a year when I didn’t get at least 20% back.
4. The personnel. Amica does not use local sales agents as most companies do. Instead, they have several offices which you reach by a 1-800 number. Although some people I have told about Amica have been concerned about not having a person to see face to face, I have always had outstanding, friendly service from the Amica staff. When my wife and I bought our first house, our Amica Representative was SO HELPFUL and attentive. She actually took time to give us some very helpful hints and tips that didn’t have anything to do with our home owner’s coverage. It was like talking with a friend or close neighbor!
I’ve said enough. If you are shopping for auto or other insurance coverage, you should make Amica one of the companies you call for an estimate. I think it will be well worth your time. Call 1-800-24AMICA.
