Your Home Is Safe With State Farm - State Farm Group - Home I have had insurance provided through State Farm for over 8 years. (I have had both Auto and Home through them) ...

I have been with State Farm Insurance company since 1987 when I purchased my first car. Now my home is covered too (since 1991) and I have received the same prompt, excellent service as a homeowner.

Because I already had car insurance with State Farm, I didn’t really shop around for Home insurance. I knew that with multiple policies I would receive a discount on my home owners insurance, and at $18 per month, the savings could only be slight if at all. I live in a very nice mobile home on 4 acres of land, so I’m not covering a huge investment in real estate. Also, I have residual value insurance, as opposed to the more expensive "replacement value" insurance policy that is available.

What do I pay and what is my coverage?

$20,000 on dwelling

$2,000 on Property

$100,000 on Personal Liability

My Premium is $252 per year after the home alert and renewal discounts.

(NOTE: I have a personal philosophy about insurance that says, "the odds are on the side of the insurance company not the consumer, otherwise insurance companies wouldn’t be able to stay in business, thus I generally get the lowest coverages that will protect my investment. Many people disagree with that philosophy, but I strongly resist the fear that motivates much of the insurance industry to pressure people to pay higher premiums.)

So do they pay? How is their service?

I have had two claims in the past nine years. Many of the complaints I hear about homeowners insurance is that companies will try to worm their way out of paying what things are worth in hopes that people won’t complain. I have never sensed anything like that coming from State Farm. Here are my experiences. In the end I actually was better off after the claim than before.

More than a simple toilet overflow

I have had two house claims over the past nine years I have owned my home. A supply line to the toilet broke while we were away and flooded large portions of three rooms. State Farm allowed me to quote the job myself, including a charging very decent labor rate. State Farm took the quote at face value (minus the deductible) and sent me a check. I did the work myself to my satisfaction, and did some added insulating under the floor while I was at it. The claim check was able to pay for all the supplies I needed, pay for my labor, and since I was able to save money on some of the materials, I actually had money left over. I believe I did the work as well as a regular contractor would have.

TIMBER!!!

Coming home to find the utility pole with electric wires laying across my driveway was very disconcerting. I didn’t even think I would be able to turn this one into insurance, so I went ahead and made arrangements to get it fixed. The electric company came out to disconnect things and then reminded me to call them when I had a new pole up so that they could reconnect. I just happened to be borrowing ryansridge’s wonderful John Deere tractor which had a posthole digger on the back. A neighbor had an old telephone pole left over from a recent job, and so I decided to use it to replace the broken pole. I put the new pole up, attached the electric meter back up, and called the electric company to reconnect the service. It took two days to complete.

A week later, I had the thought, "I wonder if my insurance would cover this work?" I had spent quite a few hours working on it. When I talked to my agent, he was a little concerned that I didn’t have any pictures or anything to show him, but I did have the electric company phone call on record and that was enough for him. He asked me to get a quote from a contractor for what the work "would" have cost. After a follow-up call from a State Farm adjuster, a check was sent in the mail for the costs (less the deductible, once again), which compensated me very well for my time and work. I actually spent less than $20 on the supplies I needed to hook up the electric meter again. This all occurred AFTER the job was all finished and paid for. State Farm is GREAT!

As I mentioned in my review of State Farm Auto, I received a $30 rebate check from State Farm in October ‘00. The letter they included with the check explained that a lower-than-expected claim rate for the year resulted in a surplus of premiums. State Farm was returning the unused portion back to the customer. If only our government would do that.
