While living in California, I had always been insured with Mercury Insurance, until the beginning of 1999. At that time, they sent me a letter with their new 1999 rates. I was horrified with these rate changes and started looking around. I am a 28 year old woman with no tickets, yet the new rate was more than friends of mine who have had multiple tickets.
I called and requested quotes from many - Gecko, AAA, Allstate, State Farm, and Farmers, to name a few. 20th Century beat them all by at least $200/year.
I haven’t had to file a claim yet, so I don’t know if the service is good in that regard yet - hopefully, I won’t have to try that out.
The ease of becoming insured was a big plus as well. With Mercury, I had to take the car to their office to have photos taken, and when I changed my address, it was like signing up all over again. With 20th Century, everything was done by mail, and no photos were required.
