I have been a insured of Automobile Club of Southern California since I began driving in 1979. Through that period of time, I have insured a total of six vehicles (1968 Chevrolet Chevelle, 1985 Ford Mustang GT, 1987 Kawasaki Ninja 600R, 1990 Jeep Cherokee LTD, 1993 Honda Civic Si and my current 1997 GMC Jimmy SLT 2-WD.
I remember my first vehicle’s (1968 Chevelle) insurance was $800 just for liability! Everyone told me, keep your nose out of trouble and your rates will go down.
Auto Club gave me every excuse in the book, "Well, you have a V8 Mustang GT which statistics show people who own this vehicle are likely to speed and get into wrecks". OK, fine, I’ll pay the $1,200. Then I bought my motorcycle. Again, AAA tells me, "Well, you bought a hot motorcycle which is prone to theft and statistics show you are more likely to get badly injured in a bike wreck". Geez, OK, fine what’s the bill? $645. Then I trade the Mustang in for the Jeep. AAA says, "The sport utility and the 4-wheel drive adds x-amount so your bill is $1,400". When I bought my Honda, was relieved to see my rates drop to $560! Then I bought my GMC truck and my rates went sky high. Stats, stats, stats — this word should be etched into AAA mission statement or advertising, "At AAA, Statistics means everything!"
I seriously believe auto insurance companies do practice "red lining" where they charge more if you live in an undesirable area verses a prestigious neighborhood like Beverly Hills. It is illegal but call various insurance companies and you will the wide variance depending upon what zip code you give them.
The Auto Club does have great member services. I take advantage of free American Express travellers checks, free travel maps and travel guides and member discounts at various business establishments across California. You can also pay your car’s registration and order personalized license plates.
When I bought my home in 1999 I combined my auto insurance and homeowners insurance for a reduced rate. Although AAA provides me with a rate reduction due to favorable claims (I have not had a chargeable accident in more than 12 years and no tickets in more than 10 years), I think they pad their auto insurance. This years auto insurance is $1,000 yet I have a squeaky clean driving record.
The Automobile Club of Southern California (AAA) takes the leg work out of accident claims as well. A lady rear-ended me on the San Diego Frwy. in Costa Mesa. She was uninsured and I worried I was going to stuck with the bill. AAA told me to relax and they would go after this lady. AAA got me a rental car and allowed me to take my truck into my favorite dealer for the repair work!
One final comment, if you drive an expensive vehicle like a BMW, Porsche or Mercedes-Benz, opt for the highest deductible you can afford to pay if you have to get the car repaired. I raised my deductible to $500 from $250 and saved $400 off my auto insurance. Also, add a theft deterrent device like Lo-Jack and park your car in the garage. This will allow you to save on your rates too!
Are you a scientist? doctor? hold a Ph.D? belong to an engineering affiliation? For some odd reason AAA will give you a BIG discount figuring you are an intellectual and less prone to accidents. Does this sound funny? To me it’s hilarious!
