Progressive was there! - Progressive Group - Auto Bam! "Oops" was all I could say to the devastated lady that I smacked into last March. Although she was ...

My husband and I signed up for Progressive auto insurance about two years ago. After speaking with a representative on the phone for over an hour, which I didn’t mind because I’m a people person and he was really nice, we had covered EVERYTHING. Our past payment history, driving records, length of time driving, make and model of vehicle. The man quoted a rate with which we could live.

One month later, we got our next bill which was substantially higher. We were told that they ran a credit check on us, and the credit check told them that we were “not a good risk.” Outraged, I asked them what the heck that was supposed to mean. I was informed that Congress had recently passed legislation giving certain states, any who wish to adopt it really, the right to charge higher rates to people with lower credit ratings. If you’re like us, just about getting from paycheck to paycheck, you’ll join me in resenting the idea that there is a correlation between your not being a person of means and your level of responsibility on the road. I should add that I am not drawing that conclusion from thin air, I asked the man what the rationale for that practice is. He told me that “studies” have shown that people with lower credit ratings tend to have more accidents. I was very turned off, and considered that to be income discrimination. I still do. The worst part about it was how confident and proud of his company’s presumed moral right to behave so offensively this jerk was.

I was angry enough to start looking around for another carrier, but I was in school full-time, my brand new husband was working 60 hours per week (you can see how irresponsible we are). So we sort of let it go, and the next month, got a bill that was even higher. We asked why. It was because they had found “some information” that hadn’t come to light before. As God is my witness, we withheld nothing, we lied about nothing, we forgot NOTHING.

By now, I was really annoyed. I screamed on the phone about how this company has no honor and they raise our rates every month, feeling not at all inclined to honor the quote. I made a mental note to definitely look around for something else, and the next month’s extortion…er, um, I mean bill, correlated directly with our being really short of cash and being late with the payment. I don’t recall exactly what the events were, but we had to go through some great ordeal to get it restarted. Of course, our rate was slightly higher than what it was two weeks before.

When they sent us the new bill with an increased rate, I called them and canceled. I told the snippy person on the phone when she inquired as to my reason for canceling that her company refuses to honor a quote made by a trained representative, with whom I spoke for over an hour. She said, “Well, it isn’t our fault if you decide not to be forthcoming with all the information. We can’t be responsible if the applicant LIES.” I said, “Excuse me, but if you are implying that we lied, we do not lie, and if you’re implying that we left something out, we spoke to that guy for over an hour and in that long, you don’t leave details out. You’d have to be spending an half an hour talking about movies or something (which we weren’t). It makes it impossible for us to budget and plan if you’re changing our rate every time you send a bill, not to mention that as you know from that CREDIT CHECK YOU RAN ON US, we aren’t people of great means. We cannot afford what you are now charging. I mean, if this is how you treat us when we haven’t had an accident, how am I supposed to drive confidently and be sure that you’ll be there for us when we do.” She said in her most irritated voice, like I’d just insulted her husband or something, “We have EXCELLENT roadside assistance.” I said, “Well, yes, that’s what I’ve heard on all the commercials, but I notice that your commercial shows you driving to the scene of an accident your customer had and driving the OTHER GUY home. What I’ve seen so far doesn’t give me any reason to believe that you’ll be on my side in an accident. You tell me, if this is what you do with our rates under normal circumstances, how exactly do I keep from quaking in fear at what will happen if I DO have an accident (no answer to that one)?” She proceeded to get her back up some more, and I just had to cut her off and say, “Look, the fact is that this simply is not open to negotiation. Perhaps you’ll think more carefully about your practices in the future. I only told you all this because you ASKED ME why I was leaving. A question was asked and answered, I do not wish to fight with you, and I have to go.” She said, “Thank you for using Progressive.” I said, “You should move in here and cook me dinner for a month for using Progressive, but have a great day.”

Anybody can treat the economic elite well, but what about the rest of us?
