There’s an interesting story about why I have Country Mutual insurance for my car.
I used to have a small town insurance company (Pekin) in Illinois, and I left my car parked next to my apartment over a weekend while I went out of town. While I was gone, the attic of the house next door burned. When I returned, most of the house was gone, my car was inside a yellow taped fire line, and there was chunks of the asphalt shingles all over my car. It scratched the heck out of my paint. My insurance challenged the insurer of the house, Country Mutual, and Country Mutual wouldn’t pay. My insurance rolled over and gave up, forcing me to pay my $500 deductible. Soon thereafter, I found out that not only was Country Mutual more of a "winning" insurance agency :-), but also they were about 25% cheaper.
I had one claim when I lived in Illinois (someone tried to break into the car, causing $1300 damage) and they handled it extremely quickly. They even drove out to my work parking lot and did an adjustment while I wasn’t there. I had a claim on my renter’s insurance and they handled that just as speedily as I would expect.
I have since moved to Washington and still have Country Mutual. We find their rates to be extremely competitive, and I have nothing but praise for their customer service.
There is one thing that turns most people off, though: you have to join the farm bureau. It’s about $15/year, and it’s kind of to a good cause anyway. They have some discounts for farm bureau members (mainly at the feed store :-), but the main benefit is the low insurance rates.
I believe that they do not insure people who have had many at-fault accidents.
