If your driving record is good, Geico offers an outstanding combination of price and claims service. Their customer service is pretty good also.
I’ve been with Geico for 8 years after nearly 20 with Allstate. I wish I’d discovered Geico sooner. I am a good driver with only one speeding ticket and have had no accident claims where that were my fault. Those are probably important qualifiers, as I have heard that Geico will drop you if your driving record or claims history sucks. Of course, no carrier really treats high risk drivers particularly well.
My wife and I have two cars insured with Geico and our rates have been more or less stable over the insurance period. No significant increases or decreases in premium. However, every couple of years, I do check rates with other carriers and have not found any that can come much closer than $100 to Geico’s annual rate. Their low rates were what prompted me to switch in the first place.
Between us, we have had four situations when we’ve had to file a claim. None were our fault; in fact, two claims occurred while the vehicles were parked. For three of them, the damage did not prevent us from using their drive-in claim center. In each of those occasions, we were in and out in less than an hour with checks in hand that very fairly covered the damage. In the last case, the auto body shop’s estimate was paid without any questions.
Frankly, this is one of the things that’s most important about insurance. How do they react when you really need them? In my experience to date, Geico has been excellent.
I’ve found their customer service people to be uniformly excellent and courteous. In one case, they even suggested we drop certain coverages because they didn’t really apply to our vehicles. Usually the burden is on the customer to determine which coverages are necessary and it’s rare in my experience for a company to tell you that something you’re paying for isn’t necessary. On this score as well, Geico wins.
I’ve read some other opinions that Geico is slow to send out bills, but that hasn’t been my experience. We get our renewal notice at least 60 days prior to the expire date. I’ve had to wait on hold for fairly long periods occasionally (5-10 minutes), but that’s really the only negative I’ve experienced.
