I live in NJ and auto insurance is expensive and mandatory. Many major insurance companies have left the state making getting auto insurance a difficult proposition.

In 1998, I opened an auto insurance policy with AIG. At the time I was a single college student driving a ten year old car. My rate was fantastic and I couldn’t have been happier. I purchased my first new car in 1999 and of course my rate increased but it was still great and I thought I had an insurance company to last me the long haul. In 2000, I got married and added my husband and his truck to my insurance policy. We couldn’t believe what we were saving! We continued this way until July,2001 when we put in our first claim.

My husband had a minor accident in July of 2001 involving his truck and a garbage truck. There were no injuries, no damage to the other vehicle, and no summons issued. My husband was considered to be at fault for the accident and there was about $2000 in damage to his truck. After paying our deductible, AIG paid out about $1500 in damages for the repair of his truck.

We expected that our insurance premiums would increase after this but were pleasantly surprised when we got our renewal policy in December with little or no increase.

In March, 2002 we got a letter from AIG saying that they were dropping our policy at the end of the term because of the accident the previous July. We were shocked and tried contacting the customer service department but we had very little luck. We began searching for new auto insurance and found a new company where we were paying about 30% more than with AIG. We later found out that AIG was dropping almost all of the policies they had in NJ. We were very upset with this decision because it came with no warning and very little reason. We decided it was best to go with a large company, local agents, and a higher premium where we would be less likely to get dropped for one minor incident.
