In college, I bought a used car. Because I had purchased the car myself, my parent’s insurance company (USAA) decided I was no longer covered under their policy. Goodbye $1,200 a year coverage.
I started with Allstate and after the first six months, I realized I could probably do better. Geico was running the same ads they’re running now, about a 15 minute call saving you x percent or more a month.
I called Geico and they were able to give me a pretty good deal, about two-thirds of what I had been paying for Allstate. I think I had two speeding tickets and one accident in the past five years at that point. (Don’t judge me! I was young and inexperienced. My record has been clean for a few years now.)
They gave me insurance and the insurance card (required in Washington State) and I gave them money. And it was a good relationship.
The only time I ever contacted them was to try to use the roadside assistance I had as part of my insurance. They said because it was a U-Haul, the U-Haul’s insurance, and not mine, would prevail. (I think they wanted to get out of paying for it.) I had accidentally run the U-Haul out of diesel and needed a mechanic to come get it restarted. (If you take only one thing from my review today, don’t run a vehicle out of diesel.)
Stranded in the middle of northern California just off the freeway, they were nice enough to located a mechanic for me and get him dispatched to the scene. Cost me $50, but the fact that they were at least able to get someone out to help me meant a lot.
After finally arriving in Los Angeles, I called Geico to change my records. He ran the numbers into the computer and it came back with a price of $8,000 a year!!! (Yes, you read that correctly — eight thousand, or 2 and a half times what I had paid for the car)
I was stunned. I tried to ask but words failed me. The guy was really apologetic. He explained to me that that’s what the computer was saying and I asked if they normally insured people in California or if they just didn’t want my business. In a sad and very hushed voice he said "I guess we don’t want your business." He was really, really apologetic about it. I think we ended the call by not changing my address, with me promising to find new insurance within a week and promising to be very careful.
So, while I never had a claim with Geico, their rates in Washington State were really reasonable and because of whatever weird combination of factors, for me, wasn’t even an option in California.
And the customer service is really good. You can reach someone at any hour of the day and the wait times were really reasonable. If they can give you a good rate, then I recommend them.
