I insured my first car with Geico 16 years ago under the military plan and I am still a happy customer! Low rates are a top concern for obvious reasons and I don’t want to compromise service. I’ve looked over the years at changing but I haven’t find another company that can offer anything better. Geico has always been there when I need them and I feel confidence that I’m getting good protection from a reputable company.
Competitors
I have locked in to a really good rate and although I check other insurance agencies from time to time I can not find one that can give me a better price than Geico does. They offer noteworthy discounts for government, military, educators, and students.
I understand the premiums are higher for the “unlucky” drivers and most are not even accepted.
In case you haven’t heard the commercials yet, you could save hundreds by calling Geico for a free 15 minute quote.
Should you decide to switch to another company you might want to wait until the end of your 6 month contract before changing.
Customer Service
I have used their customer service line many times and find it exceptional. I’ve called several times to ask them to explain what terms mean or what my policy covers. They even recommend items I have that I could remove to save me money. They seem to be using a database that logs calls because when I call I’m able to continue a conversation rather than starting from scratch.
Geico’s Website
I use their website on a regular basis. I am able to pay my bill online, request new insurance cards, change my address, add a car, see a break down of what items I am being charged for, change my policy, and more.
I receive an e-mail when my bill is ready and then I receive a courtesy email to let me know that I have paid.
Payment Options
They accept payments many different ways. I am pleased that they just recently added the option to pay by credit card (no extra fee to use credit card). They also offer direct withdraw, payment over the automated phone, payment through customer service, personal check, personal check online, or in their office. You can also pay in full for the year or make monthly payments.
Claims
I went 9 years before making a claim with Geico. Some bad-bad boys stole my car and damaged it to the point that it could not be driven. Here was the moment of truth. The lady was very helpful when I placed my claim and described what I could expect.
The police were familiar with Geico and arranged for the vehicle towed to a Geico-approved repair facility. I was assigned a local agent and given his direct line and he would be my contact for any questions or concerns about the rest of my claim.
The local agent showed up to the repair shop and wrote up an estimate and communicated it with the repair shop. Since our car would be in the shop for a couple of weeks Geico arranged for a rental car.
Their policy has since changed however you still have the option to add a rental car to your policy for a small monthly fee. The rental pays a certain amount per day so we ended up only paying about $100 for the rental for two weeks.
Geico had left a check with the repair shop and I just wrote a check for $250 to the repair shop for my share of the deductible when I picked up the car.
I filled out a form to be reimbursed for the car seat that was stolen from my car. I received a check for that in about two weeks.
My rates did not go up as a result of this claim.
My second claim came a year later when someone took a key and drug it down the side of our van. The cut was deep therefore needed to be repainted because it couldn’t be buffed out. We took the van to a Geico-approved repair facility which had an office for a Geico agent in the building. He walked outside and looked at the damage and I took the paperwork to the repair shop in the same building. It as a very simple and painless claim and my rates did not go up.
Claims three and four were my husbands. He spent a lot of time driving on the interstate with trucks which kick up sand and rocks which damage the windshield. The windshield was never broken however the speckles in it resulted in difficulty seeing through it when the sun hit it just right. He called Geico and they were able to replace it free of charge. The windshield repair man came to his car at his work and completed the task quickly.
Emergency Roadside Assistance
Emergency roadside assistance is also available for an additional monthly fee. They cover things such as lock outs, break-down towing, battery problems, tire changes, and bringing gas. We pay $8.00 for the year per car for this service which is a lot cheaper than a traditional auto plan. Plus, your car is insured not the driver so you don’t have to pay a bunch of money for a family plan.
Rental Insurance
Though we had rental insurance we didn’t “assume” we needed it since a rental car isn’t very expensive. However, when our car was stolen it was in the shop for a month. Geico paid for the rental which saved us a grand. The rental company took care of the paperwork and dealt with Geico directly so we didn’t have to wait for reimbursement.
Mechanical Breakdown Insurance
When we bought our new cars, Geico offered us a Mechanical Breakdown Insurance which we gladly signed up for. The service can only be elected for vehicles that are less than 15 months old and have less than 15,000 miles. Of course you will pay for the service a few years before needing to use it because most things are covered under the manufacturers warranty.
One of our cars has already reached the end of it’s manufacturer’s warranty and we have already needed to use this unique benefit. Our local Ford Service Department called Geico and got the approval to have the item repaired. We paid the $250 deductible to Ford and Ford worked out the rest with Geico. We didn’t have to fill out paperwork and wait for reimbursement. That one incident has already more than paid for itself and gives us a huge piece of mind.
There are restrictions. It doesn’t cover normal wear items like tires and breaks. Geico also verifies that the damage wasn’t caused by neglect or misuse.
Homeowners
There are some states that Geico does not cover. They would not insure our home when we lived in Florida probably for obvious reasons.
We have now relocated to Tennessee and have added our homeowners to our Geico policy. Though it is actually Travelers Insurance.
Flood Insurance
We also have our flood insurance serviced through Geico. Only areas that participate in the National Flood Insurance Program (related to FEMA) are eligible. Geico/Traveler’s is one of the few insurance companies that issue this insurance as a convenience but the federal government administers the program. A 30-day waiting period is usually required.
I didn’t get much information from Geico or their website about flood insurance. Check out FEMA.gov site for details.
Earthquake Insurance
This is the biggest complaint about our policy. I haven’t shopped around for earthquake insurance so I don’t know how this is in comparison to other companies but a $30,000 deductible sounds very steep to me.
Identity Fraud Protection
We also elected fraud protection. It covers $25,000 towards getting things straightened out. It’s inexpensive and there’s no deductible.
Military
Military members usually get a 15 percent discount for being an active duty member, retired from the military, or a member of the national guard.
You will also special discounts such as a storage plan which enables you to reduce or suspend your insurance payments while your car is in storage. Military members may also get an additional discount when being deployed.
A military member could also obtain insurance for their car through Geico while they are driving their car in another country.
Geico also offers a program to insure your property when you are overseas. You will be able to insure your overseas property through Geico allowing your to read the agreement in English and paying in U.S. funds. If can also cover your belongings while it’s in transit.
Overall
I have had very good service with Geico. Several times when I needed proof of insurance they faxed it to me within seconds. They were patient at giving me quotes for new vehicles while I shopped at the dealership. They answered all of my questions about my policy without ever making me feel stupid. I like being able to see and make adjustmenents to my policy online. They made a stressful situation better by their excellent customer care while processing a claim. I love Geico. I have no reason to change.
