Spending a lot of time indoors? Afraid to go out because you might come into contact with germs, or you might injure yourself? You, like I was, must be without health insurance. Never fear. eHealthInsurance.com is here.
I’ll admit it: At first I was a little skeptical about the whole idea of buying health insurance online. It just seemed a little too personal of a transaction to make on the Web. Then I found eHealthInsurance.com. The professional look of the site put me at ease right away. I realized I wasn’t dealing with amateurs.
The site offers a variety of plans from reputable insurers and allows you to compare them to see how they stack up. I quickly decided on a BlueCross plan since I’d had good experiences with them in the past.
The next step was not so easy. There is a series of health related questions to be answered. Note that any you answer ‘yes’ to you will be asked to explain about later. After this part of the application process, I thought I was home free. Not even close.
You can not submit your application online. You must print it out, sign it, and mail it to eHealthInsurance along with payment. In my case my application was returned about a week later because I had omitted a piece of information, so please be thorough. Once your application is accepted and reviewed by eHealthInsurance, it is then passed on to the insurer that you have chosen for final review and acceptance. This is not a process that happens overnight (at least not in my case). From start to finish, it was well over a month before I received my member card from BlueCross. If you have the time to wait, then it’s no problem, but if you need health insurance quickly, you may want to look elsewhere.
When my member card finally arrived, there was also a booklet outlining the plan’s coverage. It clearly explained the benefits of the plan, both in and out of network. But something was missing. There was no list of in-network doctors. I called to request a list and was told, by a very courteous representative, that one would be sent right away. It seems to me that a list of doctors should not be a special request item with a health insurance plan.
I have not yet had occasion to use my new health insurance, but I have peace of mind knowing that it’s there if I need it.
