My father has held policies with USAA for as long as I can remember. I have held a USAA auto policy for 13 years, and a USAA homeowners or renters policy for 10 years. They are one of the most efficient, well-run companies in the Fortune 500, and I believe the only Fortune 500 company that is not publicly traded.
Because of their efficiency and direct sales, their rates are among the lowest in the industry. Their service is exceptional in spite of the low rates. Two years ago we filed a claim for damage that was covered under our condo association’s master policy, but the association steadfastly refused to file a claim with the master policy. Even though the amount was small enough not to be worth their trouble, USAA let their attorneys pressure the association for six months until they finally gave in and filed the claim. USAA could just as easily have dropped the whole matter and left us to fend for ourselves, but they really went the extra mile for us.
When you join USAA, you essentially become a shareholder (sort of like joining a credit union). When USAA has a good year, they return the profits to their members (how many other insurers do this?).
The only downside is that you must be in the U.S. armed forces or a member of the immediate family of someone in the armed forces to be eligible for membership. If you have the good fortune to be in such a position, I highly recommend USAA to you.
