I had Allstate for many years and was satisfied. I switched to Geico two years ago because we were trying to cut expenses and they were cheaper. Anytime I called to ask them questions or change my policy, they were courteous and competent.
Then, two months ago, my parked car was hit by another Geico insured who was completely at fault. Long story, short…I am really dissatisfied with their Claims Personnel. I never spoke with the same person twice (they didn’t give me ONE person to represent my interests), and some of the Claims people were actually rude. When I asked to speak with a Claims Supervisor, I was told “all of the Supervisors and Managers are in a meeting.” Yeah, right. However, they were very, very good at continuously reminding me how much my deductible was. Seriously, I had to do all the leg work myself (find an auto body, have my car towed, find a rental, obtain the police report) and never once did I get the feeling that they were really there to help or guide me. When I asked for help, their Claims people were incompetent and confused. When we graduated to the ‘money’ talk and negotiations, they were then condescending, while playing stupid, which is quite a feat. This was my first claim in 20 years of driving (no points, no tickets) and I am still waiting for them to ‘make whole’ my out-of-pocket loss. They’ve cause me and my family a lot of stress.
I, and my entire extended family, are switching out of Geico. I am obtaining quotes and may go back to Allstate, where at least I had a really great Agent that I could get some customer service from.
Cheaper is not better. The only thing that really matters is what the insurer is going to do for you when you NEED them (i.e.: file a claim). Pay a little extra and get good coverage because if/when you really need it, it’s so important.
