I’ve used ACIA (Automobile Club Insurance Agency) since I moved to Michigan 8 years ago. I’m lucky (also a wussy driver) in that I have had no speeding tickets and only one claim (and that was my husband).

However, I am also an idiot, someone who can’t keep her insurance papers in a findable place (like her car, where they legally belong), can’t get payments sent in on time (even when the money is in my account), and forgets little things like "Oops, we need proof of insurance to drive our new car off the lot." Which means I’m a real pain-in-the-a$$ customer who always calls in a panic and needs some extra paperwork done.

Yet I’ve always been treated quite cordially. Even when I’m calling my agent to tell him to DROP EVERYTHING and fax a proof of insurance to the dealer or to the Secretary of State (what people who live in normal states would call the DMV) pronto.

Changing terms, adding a car, dropping a car, combining accounts, finagling to figure out how to get three cars covered as cheaply as possible, asking a question (even a dumb one) have all been treated with a "no problem." When my husband had to report our collision with a pole (I am telling you, it WAS the pole’s fault) they were good-humored about it and even worked with my husband to do the inspection in a way so it reduced his hassle.

A year ago I decided to check to see if we could get lower rates, so I submitted a request via a website that searches for auto insurance quotes. It wasn’t a slapdash request, either–filled the forms out completely, listed all cars, etc, so the quotes were firm. The lowest one I got was STILL more expensive than ACIA.

My only gripe? They don’t let you change agents. It was a small thing, but I’d picked one who lived close to me so I could get my always-late payment done in person at the office without going out of my way. However, I moved nearly every year and my agent moved offices three times himself. At one point I wanted to change simply so I’d have a more convenient office, but they said their policy is to have you stay with the same agent. Not a biggie, really. I imagine if you loathed your agent they’d let you.
