I am recently considering changing insurance companies after seeing Mercury Insurance at the bottom of the list in a recent Consumer Reports customer service poll, and came here to read and comment on my own experience. I certainly have been lucky myself to not have had an accident in the 3 years that I have had Mercury Insurance, and my premiums have also decreased by approximately 25% since I first began my coverage with them, primarily for my good driving record and “customer loyalty”.
I pay a $330 premium about every six months, saving at least $90 over the installment payments, which is $15 for each payment if you do not pay the premium in full. (ie a monthly payment would be $70) Mercury will usually only quote the installment price on their bill, so you have to get the price from the actually coverage policy to get the best savings.
If you are accident prone, I think you should definately consider a different insurer, based on a wealth of complaints I have seen both here and elsewhere, but if you want to pay the smallest possible premium, I haven’t found anyone at this time that is matching their prices.
A couple of footnotes: they do insure “classic” autos, which is not something every insurance companies does. It was not much hassle to add coverage of my 1971 Mustang, and it only added about $30 to my policy for the extra vehicle. Also, when i have contacted customer service regarding my policy renewal, the wait times have never been more than about 7 or 8 minutes.
