I used Mercury as my insurance provider for one a year and a half. But I switched to another insurance carrier and don”t regret it.
Good Rates, Where Are You?
Mercury used to have very good rates. Until it was time for me to renew my insurance in July of 2000.
They increased the premiums, therefore, instead of $1840 a year I had to pay $2230 (10% more). I did not have any driving violations or at-fault accidents; my only accident was another driver’s fault and his insurance company admitted it and paid for everything.
Since I could get the same insurance coverage from a less known company for $1360 a year, I will abandoned Mercury.
I thought the rate is supposed to go down (My cars depreciate, I gain more experience, I was a loyal customer, etc.)
Name Brand
For me, Mercury was a brand-name company in which I could trust. However, when I had an accident, the response time was slow (they would not call me back in a timely manner, etc.). After that, I (fortunately) was dealing with them through an attorney. I am happy that the accident was not my fault.
Before my accident, the service was trouble-free (I mean I didn’t need anything from them so actually there was no service). They sent me invoices, I paid them. No other interaction.
As far as rate increase goes - I was told that it is a general rate increase. The rates were increased for everyone. No further explanations were given.
The increase affected all parts of insurance: liability, comprehensive and collision coverage - all of them increased.
Bottom line: Mercury doesn’t look as attractive as it used to.
