I have had 21st Century for 18 months. During that time, I have filed no claims and my driving record is clean. Everything went along uneventfully until I bought a new car. Of course, I expected my insurance to increase, so I actually did some comparison shopping. I received quotes from Travelers and AIG for $500 for six months. 21st quoted me almost $900 for six months! I thought there had to be a mistake, so I called them. A nice woman told me that oh, somehow they had me rated as not having previous insurance–it really should be $500 some dollars. She was very nice, and said she would make sure this all got straightened out–and would call me in a few days. She advised me that I had been paying too much all along, and was likely due a refund. Boy, was I happy with her after that! I thanked her many times for her help and made my monthly payment, thinking the matter was settled.
Well, you know it wasn’t, or I wouldnt be here writing, would I? Next thing, a cancellation notice arrives in the mail–because I had not made a full payment. Seemed strange to me, as I paid exactly what she asked for. I call her, leave a message and get NO return call. Called again today, asked for a supervisor and am informed that the first woman was incorrect–since I had had a two week lapse in insurance two years ago, they could not confirm I had had no accidents during that time, so I was being charged a higher rate.
Unreasonably, I demanded to know how they could justify this, since I had been with them for 18 months and had not had one claim or violation of any type during this time. “Well, we have to treat everyone the same due to Dept of Insurance regulations and its company policy that if there has been any lapse at any time, regardless of how your experience is with US, we treat it as if you had no prior insurance.” Never mind that I have had insurance for about 25 years–lets focus on the *2 weeks* I did not, AND make me pay, pay, pay for them!
I told her that I had three other quotes for similar coverage with other carriers for HALF their price–she was unmoved.
She then advised me that if I terminated the policy, there would be a $50 fee. I told her to take me to court for it. I will be signing a new policy with another company tomorrow.
What an inflexible, bureaucratic company! BTW, I work for a health insurance company and I *know* there is definitely room to play with the rates for experience. Her line about “treating everyone the same” is a mighty wind. And I feel like a big stupid chump for being taken advantage of by this company for the past 18 months. Rarely has any company left a taste in my mouth like this one.
