I recently became self employed, and as my husband is also, we had to find individual health insurance. My former employer offered me continuation of coverage under the COBRA regulations, but the cost was $750/month for a family of three.
Right about the time I had to decide, I started hearing ehealthinsurance.com ads on the radio. Going to the site, I was pleased to get instant quotes on a variety of plans from different insurance companies. You can also search provider directories for the plans offered, so that you can see which doctors and hospitals in your area belong. I was beginning to feel better already–there were options comparable to my company’s plan for under $500 a month.
Being pretty healthy, we decided that a high deductible plan would suit us fine, so we chose a PPO with a $2,000 deductible. The cost is $230 a month, and the local doctors we like are members.
Next was the online application process. Not as easy as it sounds, the application form for the insurance company we chose (Unicare) is very long. Be prepared to look up medical information on your family for as many as 10 years back. You can submit the application online, but ehealthinsurance will still have to mail you a copy to sign. (Kinda crazy, huh?) The alternative is to print it, sign it and mail it to them. A word of advice here: the site was not clear on how to print the application. I printed with my browser’s "print" option, only to have ehealthinsurance mail me a new one to sign. Turns out, you have to hit "submit," then you’ll get printing instructions.
You will then wait while the insurance company tries to get records from your doctors. They can be slow, so start this process two months ahead of the time you’d like your coverage to begin. I was under a tight deadline and was pleased with the service provided by ehealthinsurance. They are an insurance broker and did their best to get a quick decision from Unicare.
We were approved, though the company spelled out certain pre-existing conditions on both my husband and I that they will not cover for the first few years of the policy. (These are minor health problems we have or have had in the past, so I was surprised that Unicare was so picky about them, especially with a high deductible plan.) Nonetheless, things went quickly after that. We immediately got the policy and ID cards from Unicare. The two doctors we’ve seen filed claims and received quick processing from Unicare, with notice that the charges went toward the deductible. We’ve had this coverage since January 1, 2000. So far, so good.
