After paying premiums to Pemco for 9 years and 8 months, my wife finally had her first accident (got thrown from her lane as she was driving the icy and rutty roads in the rural Spokane area and landed in the ditch). Thinking that no claims in almost ten years with only one ticket during that time frame would give me some accident forgiveness, I called to make a claim.
The damage was about $2400 and we had a $1000 collision deductible. The agent on the phone said we were certainly welcome to file a claim but advised against it. Why? Our rates would rise substantially over the next three years and this increase would actually surpass the $1400 difference between the damage assessed and our deductible.
I was then informed that if the accident had happened just four months later (our policy would have then been 10 years old), Pemco would indeed have allowed us some forgiveness in our rates. TEN YEARS??? Let that be a little lesson folks. Planning on becoming a Pemco customer? I hope you can live long enough to survive the economics of your first accident. What a joke.
One last thing. Give any insurance company as little money as you can. Buy the highest deductibles you can afford if you have an accident because as far as I’m concerned, insurance is only for those MAJOR catastrophic events. Anything less and you are just flushing your hard earned money down the proverbial toilet.
