I leased my new car in early January. They wouldn’t give me the car at the time, unless I was completely insured. Unfortunately, at the time, it was on a Sunday, so I couldn’t get through to most of the insurance agencies I tried. I saw a commercial for Progressive on television, so I figured I’d give them a call.
The representative that I spoke with was very friendly and courteous. I asked about competing rates, which they advertised on television, and they said that their computers were down so they couldn’t give me any rate quotes, but they would be happy to inform me when they could. I’ve read some other reviews with the same problem, so I wonder if this is some sort of "unwritten policy". Anyone else with Progressive "system down" experiences? I was very anxious to get my insurance, so I said I just wanted a quote from them.
The quote that they gave me was quite high - I was somewhat expecting this since I got a brand new leased car, I am a 26 yo male, and I live in San Francisco with no garage. They quoted me around $2700 a year. Keep in mind that I’ve got no accidents or tickets on my record. The majority of the insurance was for collision, so I figured San Francisco must be an expensive town. To their credit, they were very quick and efficient about processing my application, and it was approved right over the phone.
And of course, my car was hit (while parked). The person bashed my passenger side front quarter panel and I went to the Audi dealership to get an estimate. They said it would cost $2000. My deductible was $1000, so I said I would come back later. I went to a local body shop, and they charged me $500 for the same thing. I called Progressive, and told them the situation, and they said that if I didn’t make a claim, it wouldn’t appear on my record, and would have no effect on my rates.
I kept the insurance for about 4 months, until I saw another commercial for Geico, so I called them up. It turns out that they quoted me the same insurance for over $1200 cheaper! per year. They also asked me about this "claim" that appeared on my record for the dent in my car. I told them that I never actually made a claim, just a query, and the representative at Geico just took me at my word, which was very impressive. What’s not impressive is that the Progressive representative mislead me into believing that the query would not appear on my record.
Anyway, I just signed up for Geico this week, so I’m not sure how the quality of insurance is, but at least it’s a lot cheaper. In a few months (after my parked car gets hit again, it’s already been twice in 5 months…) I will evaluate Geico to see how their service is. But in the meantime, the extra $100 a month I am saving is great…
