I have been with three different insurance companies since moving out on my own and not being on my parents’ policies (much to their delight!). My first company was State Farm. I didn’t have any problems with them, however, I also never had any claims to make with them. The reason I left them was due to their high rates once I had a couple of tickets on my record. I don’t know about other states, but in South Carolina you get points for each ticket you get. The number of points depends on what kind of ticket you get (speeding, DUI, etc.). Mine were for speeding. The points eventually reduce each year in half until gone.
Anyway, I next chose to go with a local insurance agent who dealt with many companies. I went with a little unknown company due to their lower premiums. I got the same coverage. When I had a wreck which was not my fault and totalled my car, the experience was horrendous. You never realize how important insurance is and how important a company you can trust is until you have a major claim such as this. It will be a year in June 2001 and I have still not settled this claim.
Needless to say, when this coverage ran out shortly after my wreck and with my attorney’s approval, I shopped around for yet another insurance company. I went back to State Farm but they wanted outrageous premiums because of my tickets. The next place I tried was Farm Bureau. I had several friends recommend this company saying they had never had problems with claims.
Farm Bureau has been wonderful!!! First of all, they offered me premiums that were $300 less than what State Farm offered and this was WITH my two tickets. I just got my renewal for the next six months and because both tickets are due to come off my license, my premium dropped almost in half! State Farm still can’t beat this.
Now, the true test of this company - how easy are claims and how fast do they respond? The answers are extremely easy and lightning fast! I was backing out of my driveway this week when I noticed my back door wasn’t completely shut. I put the car in park (or so I thought) and got out to close the door. My car started rolling back with the driver’s side door open. I have a free-standing carport and before I could get back in the car to hit the brake, the door hit the carport and almost bent completely backwards. Many tears and an estimate by the body shop of $1000 later in the day, I phoned my agent.
I reported the accident late Monday afternoon. I was told that an adjustor would contact me about coming to assess the damage. You can imagine my surprise when on Wednesday morning a very nice woman from Farm Bureau was calling to say she had my check ready for me to pick up!! I was speechless, but it gets even better!!! They estimated the damage to be $1400 and my deductible is $500. I was only $100 short of what I needed to pay the body shop!! Need I even say that Farm Bureau will be my insurance company from now on!!!
They also supply my renter’s insurance. They, as usual, were much cheaper for the same coverage than State Farm and the agent even came to my house with all the paperwork. I would definitely recommend Farm Bureau to anyone. The only extra to join is you have to pay a nominal fee to belong to Farm Bureau. However, this membership fee which is yearly entitles you to discounts on eyeglasses, Dodge rebates on new cars, and even discounts on tires. What more could you want from an auto insurance company!?
