Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company is a large business that offers insurance policies for auto, home, renting, business, life, etc. along with financial services for investing, saving, debt management, etc. This company is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. Founded in 1925, Nationwide has grown to a very large size, with more than 100 billion in assets and annual revenues exceeding 28 billion dollars.

Nationwide has a portfolio that includes many different services, but the one that most people are familiar with is Nationwide’s Auto Insurance. Let’s take a closer look at this insurance company and see how its coverage stacks up against the competition:

Coverage Options:

Like other auto insurance companies, Nationwide offers several different coverage options to give the vehicle owner more peace of mind. Here’s a list of the basic coverages:

Vehicle Damage and Repair- This is usually purchased by owners of new cars and late model used cars. There are three different types of coverage available: Collision, Comprehensive, and Towing & Labor. Collision coverage will pay for damage caused by a direct collision with another vehicle. Comprehensive takes this a step further by covering for damage caused by things other than collision, like fire, theft, or natural causes. Towing and labor can be added to your policy to cover the cost of towing and for repairs needed at the site of a vehicle breakdown. This coverage also includes specific incidents like flat tires, dead batteries, alternator failure, and other mechanical breakdowns.

Liability- This type of coverage is designed to safeguard against personal liability caused by the use of your vehicle. It covers the cost of repairing another person’s vehicle that was damaged by yours, medical costs for bodily injury, and legal costs associated with lawsuits stemming from an accident.

Injury inside the Car- This category includes a more broad- based range of coverage for things like medical costs for others riding in your vehicle, uninsured motorists, family compensation, and no- fault injury protection.

Costs Involved:

The cost of auto insurance varies greatly from place to place and from person to person. The age of the driver, sex, occupation, distance from home to work, city of residence, specific neighborhood, and other factors all come into play when quoting an auto insurance rate. Like any type of insurance, the premiums are risk- adjusted. The greater your risk, the more you will pay. Discounts are given if you have more than one car insured.

Nationwide’s auto insurance costs a little bit more than many other carriers. Part of the reason for the higher price is the Nationwide name itself, and part of it is for the quick response and the years of reliable service that Nationwide has given to its policy holders. A large insurance company typically has a much larger asset base to access, for payment of claims, which makes it (generally speaking, of course) a little bit safer than a smaller company.

Payment Options:

Nationwide Auto Insurance can be paid semi- annually or monthly. Most people opt for the semi- annual method of payment, but the monthly method can be nice, too, because it’s more convenient and it helps spread the cost out throughout the year, rather than in two larger payments.

If you select semi- annual, Nationwide gives you the option of paying one- half of the amount when you get the bill, then the other half later on. But to use this feature, you will have to pay a small convenience fee. The same is true if you choose to make monthly payments. Nationwide will add a couple of dollars to your bill as an additional fee for the convenience you receive.

Final Thoughts:

Nationwide Insurance Company has been in the business of auto insurance for a long time, with a solid record for paying claims and keeping customers happy. I have been using Nationwide for many years now, and I have never had any problem with them. I can’t complain about the premiums, either. The prices, while not as low as some of the discount insurance carriers, are still fair for what you get.

Nationwide allows you, the customer, to define a deductible rate. This rate will, of course, affect the amount of your premium. In most cases, the options include $100 deductible, $250, or $500. Higher deductibles translate into lower monthly premium payments, but they also mean you will have to fork over more cash if you have an accident. For myself, I have my deductible set at $500. I have never caused an accident in my lifetime (knock on wood!), so I feel pretty safe with the higher deductible. I don’t foresee my driving habits changing anytime in the near future, so I will probably keep the $500 deductible, to save on premium costs.

I like the fact that Nationwide gives the option of making premium payments monthly rather than semi- annually. When I first became a Nationwide customer, I was young and owned a brand- new car. The premiums, if paid semi- annually, were too much for me to cover in a lump- sum. The monthly payment option was perfect for me at the time because it reduced the needed cash down to a manageable level.

Probably my main reason for sticking with Nationwide for so long is the friendly service. Mind you, I have never caused a wreck so I have never had to submit a claim. But my other dealings with Nationwide have all been positive. When I first signed up for Nationwide, I was treated much more respectfully than I had been with other carriers. You see, for a short time I didn’t have any coverage because I couldn’t come up with the necessary money. When I approached different insurance companies to work out an affordable deal, many of them were snotty and obnoxious toward me, harassing me and giving me lectures because I didn’t already have any auto insurance coverage (another typical example of age discrimination- they figured they could act rude because I was young- this would not likely happen now that I’m in my thirties). In addition to the rudeness, they told me that since I had no previous coverage I would automatically have to pay premium rates- the same rates assigned to high- risk individuals (those who have caused several accidents). I explained that this was impossible. After all, the reason I didn’t already have auto insurance was because of the cost. Then, I approached Nationwide. They didn’t give me any lectures or try to charge me a penalty for not having any previous coverage. They didn’t try to push products on me that I didn’t really need and/or couldn’t afford. They gladly accepted my business and treated me like an adult.

Nationwide is a mutual insurance company. This is significant because it means there are no direct shareholders. The policy holders are considered the “owners” of the company. With no shareholders to satisfy, Nationwide doesn’t need to worry that its company will be influenced by certain outsiders who only care about improving the bottom line at any cost. Rather, Nationwide can concentrate its efforts on serving its customers, which it does quite nicely.

Nationwide has offices all across the country, in most every city, including smaller locales. If you want to get a quote, just logon to the web site, nationwide.com, and click the appropriate link. They will quote you a rate, based on your answers to specific questions, in just a matter of minutes. If you prefer, you can also call a local agent to get a quote or call Nationwide’s toll- free number, 877-551-1001.

Overall, I’m satisfied with my relationship with Nationwide. I have never submitted a claim, so I can’t comment on the company’s effectiveness in this area. But I know that Nationwide is a friendly, helpful company that has always treated me with respect and dignity. For this reason, I will continue to use Nationwide for my auto insurance needs. Great customer service has made all the difference!
