I’ve had my auto insurance with State Farm since 1974; it’s covered me well through the four cars I’ve owned in that time, and all those I rented. Almost all of my experience with the company has been very positive; the only negative experience I’ve had, and it’s significant, has been the cost of the coverage.
For the first five years I was with the company, most of those being my teen years, I paid an enormous amount of money to insure my car. How much is an enormous amount? Try $800-$900 a year. That was back in the 70s, so figure with inflation, I paid about $3000 a year (in today’s money) for auto insurance. Could you handle $250 a month for auto insurance? Worse, the car I had, though purchased new, was neither a sports car, nor any kind of high risk car. I had a Pontiac Ventura (their equivalent of the old Chevy Nova) with a straight six engine. I also had a good student discount, an accident-free discount, a discount for my seat belts, and one for the 5 m.p.h safety bumpers on my car. Ouch!! My rates didn’t start to become reasonable until I reached my mid 20s.
For a while I enjoyed reasonable coverage cost, after I hit 30. However, I moved to Gary, Indiana when I was 36, and my rates skyrocketed. It seems Gary is one of the places most prone to auto theft in the U.S. Granted, I had just purchased a new (economy) car, but now I had the pleasure of paying $115 a month for insurance. Since then, the cost has declined; I now pay only $95 a month.
But, I have to admit State Farm has been very good to excellent in every other category. Every time I’ve had an accident, contact with my agent was quick, informative, and helpful. Payment for damages has been very prompt, as has been the estimate of damage costs. State Farm has also been good in helping me find decent places to have my car repaired. In one instance, they went out of their way to help me recover the $100 deductible on my policy, when I was rammed by a semi-driver on the expressway, who then fled the scene. Working with the police, State Farm located the truck driver, contacted his trucking firm, and got them to pay for the damage to my car, and the deductible.
I’m also quite pleased with the emergency road service provision for my policy. I’ve used it about half a dozen times over the last 10 years. Reimbursement for towing and minor labor to get my car running again has always been prompt, painless, and complete.
Would I switch companies? It would only be if I could really get a great deal on the policy cost; the marginal savings I could get by switching to some other companies is not enough of an advantage. I’ll continue to pay the rather pricey premiums for my coverage, as long as I can get the excellent service I’ve had in the past.
