The company was founded in 1966 principally to serve the personal insurance needs of General Electric employees, and has since expanded to the general public. Today, Electric Insurance insures approximately 125,000 policyholders and is licensed to operate in 47 states (with the exception of Hawaii, Nevada & Michigan).

AVOID AT ALL COSTS - Electric Insurance Company - Auto
13 July 2008I had auto insurance with Electric Insurance for approximately six years. I’ve never had a single claim with them, so I can’t tell you about how they respond to claims, but I can tell you to avoid them at all costs.
Even without a filing single claim, zero traffic violations in over ten years, never missing a payment or having a late payment (I had payments electronically deducted from my checking account), they raised my rates twice during the Summer of 2005. They claimed it was from a poor credit history when in fact I have very good credit (my credit card company just gave me a $15,000 credit line). The other rate increase (over $400) was explained because claims from Florida were higher than expected (I live in Florida). What a joke!

9 July 2008Allstate is perfect for the lazy person who never wants to comparison shop. I hated them 20+ years ago and detest them today.
My first experience was many years ago when I bought a car, I requested $100 deductible (things were different back in the 70’s), and had an accident with car 3 days later (hit and run in a parking garage). When I filed claim, the scum who sold me the policy said I ordered $250 deductible (dent was $238 so I got no $$ from them!). Needless to say I was FURIOUS.

SEPTEMBER 2, 2001 UPDATE
I would not fall in love in with an insurance company but I am still very pleased with them. For example, I am in the process of doing a refinance with my mortgage company (going to a new one as a matter of fact). I need an insurance certificate on the house (which I do have). However, the mortgage co. does require additional paperwork and the company was very helpful. They returned calls promptly. I got phone extensions so I could avoid going through the telephone menus (which can make ANYONE go nuts!). All the work is done and now I can close later this week. Even my attorney was pleased with their service.

Erie Insurance Group - Erie - Auto
5 June 2008Erie Insurance Group has perhaps the best car insurance anywhere. I have been with this company ever since I started driving back at age 17 under my Dad’s policy and have been with Erie under my own policy for the last thirteen years. The rates are far more reasonable and for superior coverage compared to its competitors.
Northeast Pennsylvania has relatively low car insurance rates compared to a lot of other regions. I was only paying $1,152 for full coverage on two Cadillacs - a 1989 Brougham and 1994 Deville.

I was initially happy with Electric Insurance- they gave me a great quote online, and signing up and purchasing the policy was simple. Then, within a couple months of signing up, they found at least 3 reasons to raise my rates- a little each time, but it added up. The first was that they had given me a security discount because I had indicated that my car has a passive ignition cutoff. When they sent me a policy, they sent a form wanting some sort of certificate from an alarm company proving that this security device was in the car. Well, the ignition cutoff comes standard with my car, pre-installed, and I didn’t have any proof that it was in there (aside from the fact that Electric Insurance should be able to verify that it comes pre-installed on my model of car). So they removed that discount from the policy.

28 May 2008I discovered Electric Insurance on the web. Since they happened to have the lowest quote on an Internet search, I went with them. I initially was skeptical about Electric (hey, I didn’t know about epinions at the time!). For the sake of getting insurance on my car, however, I figured I’d try them for a few months. I have a squeaky clean driving record, so I know that was a help for my policy.
I remember their website was down the night I tried to sign up, and it referred a toll-free number to call. It wasn’t long before I was in touch with a representative. After answering their questions, I had my policy set-up in minutes.

12 May 2008I wrote a review on Electric also for the car section, one person had a bad experience. Mine was very good!
I started out with Electric with a home policy, then added the cars 3 years ago. When you combine the policies, you do save 10% on the house policy.
6 years ago my house was burglarized. My wonderful insurance co. decided I was a big risk because of this and canceled policy. (then why do we have insurance??). Of course I was really peeved about this and wrote letters to state insurance commission and believe it or not, they backed off and said they’d reinstate my policy.
