I am unfortunate enough to live in New Jersey and therefore enjoy high car insurance prices. I moved from the UK to the USA and married my beautiful wife.
We were unfortunate that both of us had no history with car insurance in the USA and therefore we were virtually forced to go to Allstate.
Our initial dealings with Allstate were good, they processed us quickly and we soon had adequate insurance for out new red neon.
Our troubles began after six months. Unfortunately, we ran into money problems, due to having to pay expensive prescription charges for my dying mother (she had move form the UK too, and unfortunately her medical insurance she had paid for became invalid!). Therefore we missed paying one installment of the insurance and the cover lapsed. I do not blame the insurance company for this, but they could have been a little more compassionate.
So, finally recovering financially, we renewed our policy. Again, with our background we really had no choice but to go back to Allstate.
Again, six months into the policy we had problems. This time, we requested a change to the policy by adding another driver. A week later we called them asking to cancel the additional coverage. However, we got billed for the extra driver. We paid what we worked out as due and sent a letter explaining why. Several months later, and after 6 letters, we received a notice that our policy was about to be cancelled.
We sent a letter by registered mail to the brokers and our policy was still cancelled. The insurance company denies receiving any letters and blames the increases on changes in NJ laws!
I am still fighting with the company for a refund and am currently under legal advice, although I am not confident that we will win a case!
All I can say is that I feel totally let down by allstate! At least, I would have expected an apology, at most a refund of the excess I paid and no penalty for early termination.
I have undergone much stress and strain since then and will never deal with them again!
