State Farm Insurance has carried all my insurance for my entire life. I have found that it can be a very good company with which to insure, or mediocre–depending on how you deal with them.
The two biggest advantages State Farm has are its size and its agents. Because of its size, it is very unlikely to be bankrupted by even a major natural disaster affecting a great many policyholders. I have known people whose insurance companies have gone out of business. Several have lost a lot of money because the company went bankrupt before the insured suffered a loss. The loss occurred before the customer could find new insurance.
The agents are the key to dealing well with State Farm Insurance. Pick your agent carefully, and not merely by the geographically nearest agent. Check on how long this person has been an agent, and how long at their current office. Ask for customers that you may contact who will recommend the agent. Try to choose the most successful agent in your area because the more money the agent brings in to State Farm, the more important their opinion will be to the other employees.
Once you have chosen your agent, keep in touch with them. Make them a personal friend, not merely a business person who sees only your checks. I go to lunch with my agent at least twice a year. I visit the office and take little gifts (flowers work well) to the office staff. I send the office cards for most holidays. Generally, your purpose is to have the agent and the staff remember you as a good, considerate and honest person. The agent and the staff are generally happy to work with a friendly customer to insure the ideal coverage for your specific situation at the best price. Since decisions about coverage and limits are very personal, it is good to have a professional who knows everything about the company advise you as a personal friend.
When a claim arises, the agent who knows you well will be even more "on your side" than an agent you have only talked with once, before your claim. Remember that the claims people deal with fraudulent claims and lying customers every day. They do not know you at all, and need to make a decision about your honesty and believability. Since State Farm agents work for the State Farm company (rather than an insurance brokerage or independent firm), their opinion of you carries weight with the claims office. This can often help resolve your claim faster and at a higher settlement.
In the 1980’s, I had a claim where items were stolen from my car in a public parking lot, possibly because I had not locked an electrically locked rear door. The claims office found the claim very suspicious (no signs of forced entry, no witnesses), but one call from my agent, telling them that I was a good, honest person, and I had my payment within a week.
I have only had five State Farm agents in my life, and I have found that the quality of the agent, and my relationship with them has been very important in my satisfaction with the large, impersonal corporation that they represent.
