If you like to talk face-to-face with your insurance company, you’ll have to move to San Antonio if you want USAA. But if all you really want is knowledgeable, friendly, helpful customer service folks, this is one company that delivers. USAA is set up similar to a credit union, where you have to be affiliated with a certain organization to join. In the case of USAA, their members are the US Military. The rates, service and product offerings are hard to beat.
I am a member only because my wife’s father was a lifer in the Army. She already had a car insurance policy, so when we got married, I went with her company. Then when we bought our first house, we got our Homeowners policy through USAA.
The service has been wonderful. Not once has USAA questioned a claim or tried to delay the payment. Over the years, we have had to file claims for a car wreck, hurricane damage, theft of a laptop, golf clubs, and cash from a vehicle, not to mention a car accident while in a rental car. Every single time, the rep who answered the phone was very friendly, knowledgeable and even compassionate about our situation.
If you have anyone in your family who is eligible, tell them to at least call and compare USAA with the policy they have now. I’d be willing to bet that they will be pleasantly surprised.
Aside from insurance, they offer financial investments and accounts, long-distance phone service, a buying service for jewelry and other things, and even own their own retirement community.
The other companies could learn a thing or two from USAA on how to take care of their customers…
