This is a tale that you could be yours. In December of 1999 I was driving my car down a hill near my home. The roads were snow covered and the conditions average for this time of year. At the base of the hill was an 80-degree left turn, with a very high curb. The cornering portion of the turn had turned into a solid sheet of ice instead of the normal snow condition for this turn. While into the first quarter of the turn, my car continued going straight. The right front wheel contacted the curb squarely, and the right rear swung around and settled against the curb. You can imagine my surprise. I have driven this route every morning, and evening, to and from work for the past two years.
I was driving a 1994 Toyota Camry XLE. The car was at a 380-degree angle in relation to the curb, and the right wheel was turned all the way toward the left. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see that this is the worst impact angle to have for a front suspension system. Especially when you hit an unmovable curb that sits four inches below the center of your front wheel. The curb was high enough to leave a small dent along the bottom of the rear door after coming around.
I contacted USAA and sent the car to a USAA approved Repair collision center. The repair was done in four days and the bill was over a thousand dollars. I have been in the mechanic field for over sixteen years and knew that this price was high for the work preformed. USAA had approved their facilities, so I bid them farewell.
A month later I receive a notice saying my rates have been raised. I called USAA and asked for an explanation. They said that the accident was my fault, and we are going to get our money back for the cost of the accident by raising your rates! I was totally dumbfounded! I was under the impression that I have been paying for coverage the last two years just in case I would have an accident. I was very upset to say the least. GECIO or State Farm never treated me like this.
It gets better! I started to shop around for another insurance company. GEICO offered me a great rate! While we were doing the application I found out that USAA place an accident report out condemning me for the accident. This raised the GEICO’s quote, and every other insurance companies rate for me also.
USAA Raised my rates just enough to be lower than what other auto insurance companies would offer me after they shot out the report. Legal extortion at it’s finest. What a great way to conduct business.
I could understand if the conditions of the accident were totally blatant disregard for my safety or anyone else’s.
That is just not the case. I am a consumer just like you. Victimized by a company that chooses to apply these types of business practices.
