I was stupid enough to buy insurance from Geico. It was my first experience with any insurance company and of course I made the worst choice possible. I needed basic insurance and the cost didn’t seem to be high (I realized that it _was_ high later after some research 
Ordering insurance over the telephone was quite simple. I needed a temporary card and they promised to fax it to me. I did receive a fax from Geico in about 30 minutes but it wasn’t my card at all… Anyway, finally I got it. It took about a month for them to mail me my real insurance card and of course my name was misspelled. For two months I was calling their customer support almost every week to clear all of the problems. Their paper forms were extremely complex and hard to understand. Customer support people were not able to help either.
After about 5 months of having my policy I bought a new car and needed new insurance. GEICO quoted me with the premium that was 60% higher than Progressive’s. That was just too much for me and I quit. My refund check from Geico came in TWO months!
I was lucky enough not to have an accident or anything. I can imagine their response time and level of service should accident happen if they can’t even do basic paperwork in a reasonable time.
GEICO like any other insurance company is in the “pure service” business. However, they don’t even have a useful web site! (maybe they do but I as a customer never heard of it!) This company is a total joke! They created a hype on TV and through direct mail that creates deceiving picture. This massive advertising expense probably explains their neglected customer service.
